Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization utilizes “tools” to assist with performing work to soft tissue structures of the human body. Derived from ancient Chinese “Gua Sha”, IASTM treatment typically consists of repetitive strokes over the treatment area with a hard beveled edge to stimulate mechanoreceptors and increase superficial circulation to the site which promotes healing.
· Harder is Better… This couldn’t be further from the truth! In all actuality, less is MORE. You should NOT cause pain or bruising when utilizing IASTM correctly. It’s normal to see some increased erythema (redness) but it is not normal to cause bruising or pain.
· IASTM Breaks up scar tissue directly… No, it doesn’t. Nothing other than a scalpel breaks through scar tissue. There are studies that have shown a secondary response of increased circulation and increased production of an enzyme that has been shown to break down scar tissue – but we still aren’t sure if its actually happening.
· IASTM “Releases Fascia and Tight Muscles” … Again, not directly but secondarily yes. Through conscious treatment of the nervous system (skin is an extension of the brain) you can provide non-threatening stimuli using the tools to help calm down an overactive nervous system.
Designed with the clinician in mind, “The Swede” offers multiple concave and convex surfaces with both a double and a single bevel edge to be efficient, effective and exciting! It’s easy to grip, easy to clean and easy to use.
